Shelf Life

You know you've been married a while when your Christmas list goes something like this:

white wash clothes (ours are disgusting, please help)
new griddle (mine has hot spots, again please help)
new toaster (only one side works)

NO JOKE. All of those items were on my Christmas list (and thanks to those of you who gave me new ones!).

Just before Christmas, I was treated to a new washer and dryer. Oh, wait, we were forced to buy them because the motor on our dryer died. Ok, we didn't have to buy the new washer, BUT...it is a nice front-loading set that supposedly saves all kind of energy and water, etc., blah, blah. I justify the set because who knows when we will, once again, have our laundry room in our kitchen (thanks US government).

So today Derick tried to vacuum (something I try to avoid). I am pretty successful at avoiding since we have a cleaning lady who, by the way, has been doing all but begging us to buy a new vacuum. Back to Derick--he turned it on and it made this high-pitched noise. It has been doing that a while. In fact, he has repaired it once. Then he showed me that the brush wasn't spinning. At all. He turned it off, announced he wasn't going to repair it again & promptly threw it in the trash can.

OK--I have to pause here. Somehow Mattie missed all of this. She was standing at her window and calls to me, "Mommy, I need to show you something. I think our vacuum cleaner is in the trash can."

Indeed.

Our replacement vacuum (costing what I think a washer should cost) is a story within itself. What a blast from the past!

It is a bright yellow pull-behind! I know, crazy. Apparently those son-of-a guns have made a come back. I was reluctant to get a pull-behind, having a very clear memory of the one my grandmother had. I HATED it. The retractable cord was always retracting itself & the vacuum never seemed to want to be "pulled." In fact, I tried this one out at the store & was promptly entangled in the cord & the hose.

But, seeing as how I try NOT to use it, that shouldn't really be a problem!

  2. Hey, I got practical stuff, too...that wedding registry will serve its purpose well for me for a while. ;)
I'm seriously cracking up at Mattie notifying you about the vacuum being in the trash--that's awesome! I can't wait for you guys to come back this summer!
