Fantasy vs Reality

My very good friend & I headed out today for lunch and some shopping. We took Caroline and my friend's 16-month old along for the fun. I anticipated getting some shopping done, but being hassled by the kids to get moving. Quite the contrary. They behaved extremely well. They even played sweetly together. I got so many good deals!

My friend has some big changes coming up &, during the course of the day, she told me how she was envisioning a big, clean house and happy kids all playing in the yard (as opposed to our base housing that is really too small). She mentioned that she had the same fantasy when she moved here & that it just didn't happen that way.

That made me remember being pregnant with Mattie. I envisioned several days a week of lunching and shopping with friends, kids in tow. Just like today, everyone was happy and it was so relaxing. I had planned to support my life of leisure teaching several aerobics classes a week, thus keeping my pre-pregnancy figure.

Ha! Instead, I had an unhappy baby who eventually got happy and turned into a very active toddler who hated eating out and, to this day, still detests shopping. Then, me moved to Okinawa and the ONE gym had no daycare. And then and then and then...

Reality is so much different than what we conjure in our minds.

But for one perfect day, I lived the fantasy!

  1. good post Julie. I always love when Moms are honest. It is the best job ever but there are some real realities that make it not the glamour we once thought.
